Barbara Clark Award for Excellence in Writing

The California Association for the Gifted announces the first annual Barbara Clark Award for Writing Excellence. Barbara Clark has been a teacher of the gifted, a university professor in gifted education, and the author of the most widely used textbook on gifted education in the world. Beyond this, however, Barbara Clark has a passion for writing and a great appreciation for the beauty of the English language. This award was created to encourage and acknowledge writing excellence in students throughout California. The award-winning student will receive a monetary award of $100; the primary award, however, will be publication of the student’s work in the Gifted Education Communicator Journal and on the CAG website.

Student applicants may be freshmen, sophomores, juniors, or seniors in high school (or the equivalent), and a member of the California Association for the Gifted must submit the student’s application for the award
The writing topic is left open to student choice, but it should address a subject of vital interest to the student that has an impact on society as a whole. The student’s submitted work should include a vision of the possible future in this area of interest. The selection of the award winner will be determined by evaluating the student’s clarity of writing, grammatical correctness, creative vision of the future, and imaginative use of English, demonstrating the beauty of the language.

The Children's Bell Tower at Bodega Bay, the outdoor memorial to young Nicolas Green, is a magical place. Stephanie Wilkie, the 2008 Nichlas Green Award recipient visited the Bell Tower with her family. It stands on open ground, a thick growth of cypress trees on one side and green hills on the other. In the background are high dunes and a tantalizing glimpse of the ocean. The tower is 18 feet high, three tubular steel pyramids from which hang 140 bells: school bells, church bells, ships' bells, mining bells, cow bells. The centerpiece is a majestic bell, thirty inches high, from the Marinelli foundry in Italy, which has been making bells for the papacy for a thousand years. Nicholas' name and the names of the Nicolas Green Distinguished Student award recipients are on it, and Pope John Paul II went to the foundry to bless it. Whenever the wind blows, as it often does on this exposed coast, the bells chime, sometimes a few at a time, emphasizing the solitude of the surroundings, sometimes an entire orchestra sounding like happy children at play. Then the sound fades away, and the children are gone.
