Thanks to the concerted efforts of gifted education advocates -- especially in Wisconsin and Connecticut -- the House Appropriations Committee restored fiscal year 2010 funding for the Javits program in legislation it approved on July 17.

Committee chairman David Obey (WI-7) included $7.46 million in the "manager's amendment" during the committee mark-up process. This is the same amount the program received in 2009. Representative Rosa DeLauro (CT-3) made a special plea with the chairman, for which we are grateful.

The battle isn't over yet. We'll soon focus our attention on the Senate appropriations subcommittee that handles education funding. National Association for Gifted Children advocates in Congress and at the U.S. Department of Education on behalf of the gifted education community to increase federal support for gifted and talented learners.  We hope that our members and other supporters will assist these efforts by communicating regularly with their Members of Congress on the needs of gifted students.
